FC Sion loses centre‑back Kreshnik Hajrizi for three months
FC Sion announced on July 3 that Kreshnik Hajrizi will be out for roughly three months after an adductor operation in Bordeaux. The 27‑year‑old, who has been with the club since early 2025, returned to Valais to start his rehab. Currently, Sion sits 5th in Super League with 52 points, a record of 13 wins, 13 draws and 7 losses from 33 games, and the recent form is DDWWW.
What does the injury mean for the defence?
Losing Hajrizi weakens the central back line considerably. Coach Luca Gattuso now has to rely on younger options Milan Šeparović and Nicolas Gomis, who have seen limited action so far. Without the experienced defender, the team must reorganise its back line, especially ahead of upcoming matches against the league leaders. The last appearance of Sion ended on May 17 2026 with a 3‑3 draw against BSC Young Boys, a result that already strained the defence.
Why is the timing problematic?
The season is already in its decisive stage, and Sion sits 22 points behind leaders FC Thun. With only a few games left, there is little room to close the gap. The current tally of 51 goals scored and 35 conceded shows a strong attack but a vulnerable defence. Hajrizi’s absence could further worsen the goals‑against tally, especially against teams that rely on quick wing play.
How will the club respond?
Coach Gattuso has said Hajrizi’s return is realistic only by late autumn. Meanwhile, the management plans to use the transfer window to secure short‑term reinforcement. A potential target is young centre‑back Luca Bianchi from FC Wil, who has delivered solid performances in recent games. The next weeks will reveal whether Sion can fill the gap without dropping more points.
FC Sion remains in the race despite setbacks and hopes that tactical flexibility and a possible new signing will stabilise the defence and keep the promotion hopes alive.
